Abstract

The textile dyeing industries use large volumes of water and chemicals during the dyeing processes. The industries discharge large volumes of wastewater containing toxic chemicals into the adjacent water body threatened environmental sustainability. The study aimed to assess the colour removal efficiency of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and ferric chloride (FeCl3.6H2O) from synthetic wastewater containing drimarene reactive red dye. The study considered the parameters including pH, coagulant doses, initial dye concentration, temperature and mixing speed to evaluate the efficiency of the coagulant. The maximum colour removal efficiency for both the coagulants PAC and FeCl3 was found to be 94 and 89% at 60 rpm, respectively. However, the coagulants showed the maximum efficiency at different pH and coagulant dose, i.e., pH 4 and 5 and the dose of 100 and 200 mg/L for the PAC and FeCl3, respectively. The study observed that the colour removal efficiency of PAC was found better than the FeCl3 for the synthetic wastewater containing dye drimarene red. The study observed that both the coagulants, PAC and FeCl3 have the potential to remove the colour from the textile dyeing wastewater containing drimarene red dye.
