SELF-ESTEEM AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE HAVING WITH CHRONIC DISEASES

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate whether self-esteem (SE) and psychological well-being (PWB) varies with people having with chronic diseases or not. 150 adult respondents were recruited conveniently from Chittagong city to conduct the study. Off them, 75 were came from a group of respondents who possessed at least one chronic disease or along with other disease and the rest of other 75 were came from a group of respondents who had no chronic disease or had no any other diseases. Bangla version of the ‘Self-esteem Scale’ (Ilyas, 2003) and the ‘Psychological-Well-being Scale’ (Huque and Begum, 2005) were used to measure SE and PWB of the respondents. Though, SE was significantly varied according to both groups but PWB was not. Both SE and PWB were significantly positively correlated in terms of each group separately. While considering the chronic disease group, SE and PWB were significantly varied in terms of ‘gender’, but they did not vary in terms of ‘the type of chronic diseases’. ‘Respondents who had other diseases additional with chronic disease’ was the significant predictor for respondents’ both of SE and PWB.
