SELF-ESTEEM OF MALE AND FEMALE UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF RAJSHAHI UNIVERSITY IN RELATION TO FATHER’S ECONOMIC CONDITION, EDUCATION AND OCCUPATION

Abstract: The present study was an empirical investigation on self-esteem of male and female undergraduate students of Rajshahi University in relation to their father’s economic condition, education and occupation. Thus, the independent variables were gender, father’s economical condition, education, and occupation. The dependent variable was self-esteem of the respondents. There were two levels of gender (male and female), three levels of father’s economical condition (lower class, middle class, and higher class), three levels of father’s education (undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate) and three levels of father’s occupation (cultivation, business, and service). An adapted Bangla version of the Feelings of Inadequacy Scale (FIS) originally developed by Janis and Field (1959) was applied on a randomly selected sample of 160 undergraduate students of Rajshahi University. The obtained data were analyzed employing ANOVA and t-test. The results indicate that the main effects for gender, father’s economical condition, education, and occupation were statistically significant. The interaction effects between gender and father’s economical condition, gender and father’s education and between gender and father’s occupation were also statistically significant. The results of t-test suggest that regardless of father’s economical condition, education and occupation, the self- esteem of male students is higher than that of the female students. The results of t-test also show that there is a positive relationship between self-esteem and father’s economic condition and also between self-esteem and father’s educational level. The results also suggest that the students from business- based families have stronger self-esteem than those from agriculture and service-based families. The students from service-based families were also found to have higher self-esteem than those from agriculture-based families.
