Abstract

The early to middle Eocene Sylhet Limestone Formation is exclusively exposed (20 m thick) at the eastern bank of Dauki River, Surma Basin, Bangladesh records sedimentary and stratigraphic architectures of the carbonate platforms. The stratigraphic anatomy and growth history of this formation is accomplished on the basis of measured section on outcrop, detailed facies analysis and sequence stratigraphic interpretation with a special focus on the identification of bounding surfaces. This research improves the interpretation of paleoenvironmental evolution in time and space especially the distribution of reservoir properties within a sequence stratigraphic framework of carbonate systems. The lower part of Sylhet Limestone Formation comprises sub-tidal fossiliferous limestone (SL1) progrades as intertidal massive limestone (SL2) accumulated in a shelf margin and down slope area which implies a progradational parasequences, on contrary the facies SL3 formed in fair- weather wave base (FWWB) reveals aggradational parasequences. These facies capped by maximum flooding surface and hence it shows the transgressive stystems tract. The upper part divulges faintly bedded limestone facies SL4 or parasequences deposited in very low energy conditions which is truncated by a drowning unconformity or sequence boundary and formed retrogradational systems tract followed by deep marine bluish grey shale i.e the Kopili Formation.
