THE IMPACT OF PERSONALITY TRAITS ON MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES: A STUDY AMONG DOCTORS IN DHAKA CITY, BANGLADESH

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between personality traits and mental health outcomes among medical doctors in Dhaka City, Bangladesh. A total of 300 (Public= 200, private=100) licensed medical doctors (aged 25–55 years) were selected purposively from public and private hospitals in Dhaka City. Among the participants 180 were male and rest of the120 was females. Adapted Bangla version of Rahmanet al. (2011) Big Five Inventory (BFI-44) was used to measure personality trait of the respondents. This scale is originally developed by John and Srivastava (1999). Bangla version of (Alimetal.2017) Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) was also used to measure mental health of the same participants. This scale is developed by Lovibond and Lovibond (1995). Obtained data were analyzed by employing correlation, regression and t-test.Results revealed that neuroticism is the strongest predictor of stress (r =.59, p <0.01; β =1.081), while conscientiousness demonstrated unparalleled protective effects (r = -.76, β = -2.593; both p < 0.01). The findings also revealed that female doctors reported significantly higher anxiety (t = -2.01, p = 0.05) than their male counterparts. And doctors in public hospitals reported significantly higher level of stress (t = -3.12, p = 0.01) than the doctors of private hospitals.
