THE LINKAGE BETWEEN INTERPARENTAL CONFLICT AND ADOLESCENTS’ ANXIETY SYMPTOMS: THE MEDIATIONAL ROLE OF ADOLESCENTS’ COGNITIVE APPRAISALS

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of interparental conflict on adolescents’ anxiety symptoms as mediated by cognitive appraisals (threat and self-blame). The convenience sample for this study consisted of 222 high school students (50% girls, 50% boys) from five schools. Participants’ age ranged from 11 through 14 years with a mean age being 12.66 years (SD = 1.01 years). Their education level varied from 6th through 8th grades. Data were collected using a package of self-report measures that include: (1) The Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (2) the Beck Anxiety Inventory and (3) the Personal Information Form (PIF) for demographic information. Results of parallel multiple mediation analysis showed that cognitive appraisals (threat and self-blame) of adolescents mediated the effects of interparental conflict on adolescents’ anxiety symptoms.
