THE OVARIAN AND OVIDUCTAL DEVELOPMENT OF RHODE ISLAND RED FEMALE CHICKEN (GALLUS DOMESTICUS L.) FROM RAJSHAHI CITY CORPORATION AREA, BANGLADESH

Abstract

Morphometric changes of the ovary and oviduct from pre-laying (PL), laying (L) and regressing (R) reproductive stages of Rhode Island Red (RIR) chickens (Gallus domesticus L.) from Rajshahi City Corporation Area were measured and assessed in this study. The weights of total ovary (M±Sd) from PL, L and R were significantly different (F2,6= 20.50; P< 0.05). The total oviduct mean lengths (F2,6= 135.5; P< 0.01) and weights (F2,6 = 69.22; P< 0.05) were also significantly different in three reproductive stages. Similar findings were found in various parts of the oviduct (length: infundibulum, F2,6 = 109.85, P< 0.01; magnum, F2,6 = 103.01, P< 0.01; isthmus, F2,6 = 120.53, P< 0.01; uterus, F2,6 = 111.86, P< 0.01; and vagina, F2,6 = 40.23, P< 0.05); (breadth: infundibulum, F2,6 = 28.27, P< 0.05, magnum, F2,6 = 94.88, P< 0.05; isthmus, F2,6 = 161.3,P< 0.01; uterus, F2,6 = 29.8, P< 0.05; vagina, F2,6 = 103.66, P< 0.05); (weight: infundibulum, F2,6 = 4.79, P< 0.05; magnum, F2,6 = 31.98, P< 0.05;isthmus, F2,6 = 841.52, P< 0.01; uterus, F2,6 = 841.52, P< 0.01; vagina, F2,6 = 120.19, P< 0.01). In all cases it was evident that the laying stage was superior to the regressing and pre-laying stages. It could be base line data for the research of the reproductive biology. Further study is necessary to find out the existence of any correlation between the morphometrics of the oviduct and egg production in other avian species.
